If you’re in the Pittsburgh Metro staring at dents, rust, a smashed bumper, or a cracked windshield and wondering, “Can I even donate this?” the answer with Steel City Wheels is yes. Cosmetic or body damage – from minor door dings in Lawrenceville to hail dents in Cranberry or accident damage in Penn Hills – does NOT stop your donation. We’ll still arrange free towing anywhere in the region, whether your car starts, limps, or won’t move at all.
Here’s how it really works in Pennsylvania. Steel City Wheels partners with Heritage for the Blind, a registered 501(c)(3) charity (EIN 58-2164446). Your damaged vehicle is picked up at no cost, taken to auction or a licensed buyer, and sold in its current condition – you do not have to repair a thing. Because value is based on actual sale proceeds, heavy damage can mean a lower sale price and deduction, but you still receive a guaranteed tax receipt for at least $500. If it sells for more than $500, you’ll get IRS Form 1098-C for the final amount. Whether you’re in Mt. Lebanon, North Hills, Monroeville, or right in the Strip District, we make it simple, honest, and straightforward.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle
Start online or by phone and let Steel City Wheels know what you’re dealing with: dents, rust, cracked windshield, accident, or storm damage. We’ll ask a few basics (year, make, model, location, title status) so we can line up the right towing and sale channel in the Pittsburgh Metro.
2. Get a clear expectation of what happens next
We explain that body damage does not disqualify your donation. Your car will be sold as-is, and your deduction is based on the selling price, not on its appearance. You’ll know that your minimum tax receipt will be $500, and that Heritage for the Blind will receive the net proceeds.
3. Schedule free towing anywhere in Pittsburgh Metro
We arrange a local tow at no cost to you, whether the car is in a South Side driveway, a Robinson Township apartment lot, a garage in Squirrel Hill, or parked at a shop in Bethel Park. Running or not, damaged or drivable, it will be picked up by a professional tow provider.
4. Hand over keys and title at pickup (when possible)
At the scheduled time, the driver meets you, completes simple paperwork, and takes the car. If you have a Pennsylvania title, you’ll sign it over; if it’s missing or damaged, we’ll walk you through what’s needed before pickup. You pay nothing for towing, storage, or processing.
5. Vehicle is sold in current condition – no repairs required
Your car goes to auction or a direct buyer as-is, dents, rust, cracked glass and all. There’s no inspection or repair checklist for you to worry about. The sale price is what determines your final deductible amount; the charity receives funds to support blind and visually impaired people.
6. Receive your tax receipt and keep it for your return
After the sale, Steel City Wheels sends you a written acknowledgment. You’re guaranteed a receipt for at least $500. If the car sells for more than $500, you’ll also receive IRS Form 1098-C reflecting the actual proceeds. Save this for your federal tax return and talk to your tax professional.
Potential complications to watch for
Severe structural damage can lower your deduction
Tip: A car with frame damage, airbag deployment, or major collision history may only attract salvage or parts buyers. That doesn’t stop the donation, but it can reduce the sale price and deduction. You’ll still receive a minimum $500 receipt, and we’ll be upfront that it may not sell for much more.
Missing or damaged Pennsylvania title slows things down
Tip: We can’t complete the donation without proper ownership documents in most cases. If your title is lost, damaged in a flood, or in a different name, contact PennDOT or your local NOTARY in places like Dormont or Fox Chapel to start a duplicate or correction. We’ll explain exactly what’s needed.
Cars stored in tight or unsafe locations need planning
Tip: If your damaged vehicle is backed into a tight alley in Bloomfield, stuck in a backyard, or in an underground garage, let us know up front. Tow trucks may need special equipment or access permissions. Sharing photos or details helps us avoid delays and ensures we send the right truck the first time.
Existing liens or insurance claims must be resolved
Tip: If a lender still has a lien on the title or an insurance claim from an accident or storm is open, we may need payoff or settlement information before pickup. Resolve any active claims and confirm lien status so transfer goes smoothly and your tax receipt can be issued without complications.
